Royal Institution KS3 Glamorgan Mathematics Masterclasses
Saturday mornings in February (Jan to March). Trefforest Campus, University of Glamorgan
The Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses were established in 1981 to stimulate and encourage interest in mathematics. High profile university lecturers from across the country travel to Glamorgan to give Saturday morning Mathematics Masterclasses.
The aim of the Masterclasses is to introduce young people to new topics they don’t normally see in the classroom. The work does not depend heavily on previous knowledge but is intellectually demanding. Teachers may nominate up to a maximum of five pupils per school (first 150). To reserve a place or for more information contact msjones@glam.ac.uk.

Free KS3 and KS4 Neuroscience Workshops for schools in South Wales

Smarter is an interactive workshop and debate aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. It explores the new market of so-called ‘smart drugs’, which significantly boost learning, concentration and short-term memory. Are they ethical to use? Is it cheating? - Help develop science and key skills, and conceptual understanding at foundation phase and KS2. Demonstrate how numeracy and science can be explored using the school grounds.

Bangor Science Festival 2013, part of the National Science and Engineering Week offers something for everyone, with activities for families and schools groups, adults looking for entertainment and stimulating debate, or professionals interested in the latest research.
Bangor Science Festival is organised with the help of the Dr Tom Parry Jones Fund, which was set up by the Bangor University alumnus and inventor of the electronic breathalyser to promote science and engender entrepreneurship in young people. More…

ASE Cymru/Wales South West Wales Section Event – 'Resourceful teaching', Keith Gibbs
Thursday 14 March 4.30pm . Swansea Museum, Victoria Rd, Swansea SA1 1SN
Keith Gibbs, a physics teacher with over 30 years of experience in a number of schools including Queen’s College Taunton, will present an interactive workshop highlighting new and exciting teaching ideas that will enable you to enrich and enhance the Science Curriculum in school. Many of the experiments demonstrated have the qualities of simplicity, novelty and surprise, including many that reflect familiar aspects of everyday life that help to make Physics both intelligible and fun for young people.
Keith is a well-known and highly respected speaker in the world of physics education and his clear and direct writing style have made his books, including “The Resourceful Physics Teacher” and his website www.schoolphysics.co.uk so popular.
Tea and coffee will be provided and there will be an opportunity to sample welsh cakes as well as a raffle. This event is suitable for primary and secondary teachers. The event is provided free of charge.

Theatr na n’Óg

With funding from the National Science Academy, See Science would like to offer Theatr na n’Óg’s FREE ‘You Should Ask Wallace’ workshops to Year 5, 6 and 7 pupils.
In 2013 it will be the centenary anniversary of Alfred Russel Wallace’s death, and to celebrate this important Welsh scientist Theatr na n’Óg’s play will be performed throughout Wales and the UK. The play tells the story of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 -1913), a Victorian naturalist, who was born in Wales, and who discovered the theory of evolution, and then shared the idea with Charles Darwin… and as they say the rest is history. Following the workshops, materials will be provided to enable teachers to run an activity/club activity and/or participate in CREST awards. For more detail contact enquiries@see-science.

The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair 2013
14-16 March 2013. London ExCeL
The Fair is a free event for all 7-19 year olds, their teachers and families – with school and college groups invited on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 March and the public welcomed on Saturday 16 March. If you are interested in submitting a student project there are places in the finals remaining for those who enter online for The Big Bang Fair 2013, and/or at The Big Bang Near Me events, go to www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/addactivity.

Year 9 Engineering Experience
These foundation courses team students up with role-model engineers who will guide students through every stage of product development to solve real engineering challenges! Previous students have worked with engineers from companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Navy.
- 2-5 April, ECITB Engineering Experience, Harper Adams University College, Shropshire (splendid, rural location in the Central England!), £95.
- 8-10 April, Engineering Experience, University of Liverpool, £175.
Each course has a capacity of 100 students; 10 places maximum per school for each course.
Easter Revision AS-Level and GCSE (Higher Tier) Revision Conference Week
8-11 April. University of Glamorgan
Gareth Morgan will give the keynote address on good exam technique and preparation for the AS-Level event. We also have a very experienced teacher and exam paper marker of many years longstanding who will take the GCSE revision day conferences. So that is really good! Year 10 Physics in Engineering
Work alongside experienced engineers, scientists and academics and encounter the extraordinary world of physics in engineering. This brand new course gives students the chance to discover how physics is applied to problem-solving in our rapidly changing high-tech world. Projects and masterclasses will be run by National Grid, National Space Centre, National Nuclear Laboratory, Rugby School, University of Warwick and the University of Leicester. Only 50 places available; 5 places maximum per school. Bursaries worth £80 are available to students attending from certain schools. See website for details.

Course fees are subsidised and include all accommodation, meals, course materials, supervision and social activities. Teachers are advised to encourage students to apply early as places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Students can apply directly from the Smallpeice website.
Easter Mathematics GCSE (Higher Tier) Revision Conference Day
Monday 8 – Tuesday 9 April. Trefforest Campus, University of Glamorgan
These one-day conferences are specifically designed to help students prepare effectively for their forthcoming GCSE Mathematics exams. In the morning, experienced teachers will work through past GCSE Higher Tier Mathematics exam papers 1 & 2 (summer 2012). In the afternoon, an expert revision speaker, Gareth Morgan, will discuss how to prepare effectively for examinations and how to develop good examination technique. There will also be some short presentations on the wide variety of career opportunities open to those who obtain good mathematics qualifications (capacity 600). Easter Mathematics AS-Level Revision Conference Days
Wednesday 10 – Thursday 11 April. Trefforest Campus, University of Glamorgan
These one-day conferences are designed to help students prepare effectively for their AS-level mathematics C2 and S1/M1 examination papers. In the morning, experienced teachers along with our own lecturers will go systematically through AS-Level C2 and S1/M1 past examination papers (winter 2011). In the afternoon, an expert revision speaker, Gareth Morgan, will discuss how to prepare effectively for an AS-level paper, pinpointing good examination technique. A brief presentation on the many and varied career opportunities open to those who good mathematics qualifications will also be included in the programme (capacity 600). It is 2 workshops in half a day. There are no charges. Schools are encouraged to follow up with CREST projects. Please contact cerian.angharad@see-science.co.uk to book.

Two presenters will visit 60 pupils per day to provide hands on fun science interactive workshops on ‘FORCES’ which will include each child playing on circus toys (plate spinning, using Diabolos, & wheel balancing) and also making a moving toy each. Following the workshops, materials will be provided to enable teachers to run an activity/club activity and/or participate in CREST awards. The overall aim is to enhance the understanding of science in the home/school and everyday life through school workshops and STEM projects to pupils of all abilities particularly those with low ability and special needs.
